When you receive your concepts, its sometimes difficult to truly evaluate which idea is better suited to your business needs. Below are a list of criteria for building a good logo. Ask yourself whether you believe that the concepts provided to you actually follow these rules.
The first style is an illustrative/text based logo, which is a combination of a logo that includes some form of illustration, whether this is a direct representation of your company or a theme based on your company name is up to you and your logo designer. Second is an iconic or symbolic logo, which is an uncomplicated logo style that can either be a symbol or some form of abstract representation of your company that can stand alone or be put together with your company name. Thirdly we come to the typography based logo design. Which is a font based logo with either no image, or a very small symbol or icon integrated into the text. Commonly mostly used for companies who are looking to create a brand.
Which ever style you choose there are of course some prose and cons to using each, and you need to ensure that the style you choose is actually suited to your company and your industry. If you are unsure about what this means to you, your logo designer will be happy to advise you in your decision. To make it a bit simpler we have put together a little guide to give a clearer picture and help you in your decision.
Illustrative/text combination
What it is!
Illustrative and text combination logos are logo designs which use both text and some form of illustration to represent either your company, brand image, mascot/character or a particular concept or image you wish to portray. The text will be incorporated to complement the illustration, whether it is a complicated illustration or a simpler icon or symbol. Illustrative logos can be as complex or as simple as you or your logo designer feel is appropriate to your concept idea. However, if you feel that your logo will require a complicated illustration, please bear this in mind when choosing your logo design package. You may want to choose a package that provides you with further revisions than our business package currently offers. We recommend, for all illustrative logos, the Advanced and Premier Logo Packages.
Is this right for me?
An illustrative logo will most definitely provide you with a completely original and unique logo design, unless of course you use a template logo or buy clipart or stock images.
If you would like your company to be represented by a mascot/character, this is obviously the logo style for you. If you deal with pets or animals, bars and restaurants or any child and youth orientated industries you may also benefit from this style of logo. This style may also be beneficial to you if you are looking specifically for logos that will be used on t-shits and other apparel, however, the reproduction cost may be more expensive depending on the complexity of your illustration.
Be aware however, that unless you hire very skillful and experienced designers or illustrators such as our designers at Design2Go, you may end up with an amateurish or over complicated final logo. As although these logos can be quite complex, they still need to remain as simple as possible. Colours and typefaces need to be expertly chosen.
These logos can also be very difficult to reproduce, therefore, if you know that you will often be faxing your logo, that your logo will be used on small pintables or if your logo will also need to be in black and white, these are certainly factors which will need considering before making the decision to choose an illustrative logo. Discuss this with your logo designer, as he/she will be able to advise you accordingly.
Overall, this style logo can be fun or can also be stylish and sophisticated. It can be easily recognizable (if you have a character or mascot) or can actually be less recognizable in comparison to the other logo styles. It can open up endless imagery and logo variation possibilities for brand and marketing materials or can be quite limiting.
Whether you choose this style or not, we can not stress enough the importance of using highly experienced and qualified logo designers who will consider any limitations or difficulties and will deliver a final logo design that has been designed to directly suit your needs and uses. Iconic/Symbolic
What it is!
Icons and symbolic logos can be captivating, eye-catching and uncomplicated images that are symbolic of your particular company or product. Using imagery they depict a literal or an abstract portrayal of your company or organization. Iconic/symbolic logo styles can directly reflect or offer a wider interpretation of what your company or organization represents. An iconic/symbolic logo is ideally an image, which can work well as a stand-alone logo (just an image without text) or can be accompanied by your company, organization or product name.
Is this right for me?
This logo style, unlike the illustrative logo style is easier to recognize after a limited exposure, and as such are usually favoured by start-up companies or companies looking for a highly professional or cutting edge image.
As a result of the logo styles simplicity, it is a lot easier to reproduce and can easily be adapted to black and white and other colour variations. This style will also be better suited to logos which will need to be printed or reproduced on a small scale or at low resolutions such as fax headers.
The drawbacks to this logo style are that it can often be very difficult to create a unique icon or symbol, especially one that directly reflects your company and values. For this reason this logo style requires a very experienced logo designer. Design2Go has the expertise and experience to create a completely unique and representative iconic/symbolic style logo for your company or organization, get started today!
Typography-based
What it is!
Typography-based logos or logotype incorporates your company or brand name into a uniquely styled type font treatment. Typography based logos are the simplest in appearance of logos, but are very difficult to design. A typography-based logo has to be simple, memorable and convey a strong message to its intended audience. Usually preferred when looking to create a brand identity and most often seen used by blue chip and fortune 500 corporations.
Typefaces are carefully chosen, refined and altered or even hand-drawn to intrigue the eye and capture interest. Some form of representative image or symbol can be integrated to add visual effect.
Is it right for me?
The great benefit of a typography-based logo is its simplicity. It is easier to remember and more likely to be later recognized after initial exposure.
As a result of this simplicity the typography-based logo style can easily be reproduced, whatever size, colour, resolution or media format the logo will remain clear and easy to read. The reproduction cost are also likely to be far less than the other logo styles.
This logo style however, is unlikely to illustratively represent your company function or services. It is also likely to have less of a ‘wow' factor than an illustrative or iconic logo.
Along with all the logo styles, it is vital that you hire a very experienced logo designer to design your typography-based logo.
