Briefing Your Designer

Back to Tips and Advice

Before hiring a graphic designer to design your new design project, it is beneficial to both parties for you to have already begun thinking about your design brief. Whether you will be submitting a brief for tender or completing a designers own brief form, it is crucial to have carefully thought out what your company is and does. For example, can you clearly state what your niche market is and how you fit within your industry sector and current market position?

Start by creating a short honest synopsis of your organisation or company.
When completing a logo design, graphic design or web design brief try not to leave any questions blank. Each question is included to give the designer as much understanding of your requirements and preferences. Do not take any company information for granted, your designer may not have had extensive experience designing within your industry before and any information is crucial to the success of your design concepts.

If you have your own ideas, provide them.
Many people believe that if they provide too many specific details for their designer that will restrict the designer during the design process. There is also a belief that if you show examples of other designs which you like, you will end up with a copy of that artwork. These are design ‘myths and the truth is actually quite the opposite. Enabling the designer to get a sense of what you are looking for will open up even more creative possiblilies.

If you can't describe it, show it.
Many clients have a vague idea of how they want their final design to look, but simply have trouble articulating these ideas or lack the skills to put the image on paper as an example. This is a very common scenario. If you are able to direct your designer to existing designs along with as much detail of your preferences and objectives, your designer will be able to identify the elements such as colour combinations, fonts and design style to create a unique design which matches your vision.
